5 Ways To Sweeten Up A Dorm Room

Can you believe it's August already?  You know what that means?  Yep, September is just around the corner, and students will be heading back to school!  So, we thought we'd take a few minutes and chat about five easy ways to decorate a dorm room and make it super stylish just by adding fabric...

1.  Upholstered Headboards:  These are a great way to add personality in the space!  Any style can be created, and any fabric can be used, so the sky is the limit.  Another great thing about upholstered headboards is that they can be made to mount on the wall, or a bed frame, so very versatile depending on your needs.  And speaking of versatility, these headboards are easy to move and work in any bedroom, and seeing as school is a minimum of four years, and chances are there will be a few different living situations during that time, upholstered headboards are win, win.

2.  Bed Scarves:  These are a great way to add a bit of patten and colour to the bed!  These are a wonderful way to breakup an otherwise boring {yet practical} duvet, don't you think?  And by doing what they have done in this room, and having the scarf coordinate with the rest of the bedding and the drapery, it really helps to tie the look together.

3.  Window Treatments:  A great way to add warmth and style to the space!  If you follow along with our blog {or on our other social media channels like Facebook or Twitter} then you know we always recommend to finish off your windows - It really is a key element to consider when decorating any room, yep, even a from room.  They can be simple panels but with a bright fun fabric, like shown above, they can really add some major character to a usually boring space.

4.  Throw Pillows:  This is the easiest way to add character to a boring dorm room!  By mixing and matching various fabrics, sizes, and textures, you'll create interest for sure.  And you won't just be adding style, you'll also be adding comfort, which is so important as there will be lots of reading going on during the school year, right students?

5.  Bedskirts:  A great way to hide those ugly bed frames!  You know those dorm room beds are practical, but far from pretty, so hide them with a bedskirt.  And by making one that coordinates with the rest of the bedding, and having it match the headboard, it really creates a nice cohesive look to the space.  It also enables you to store stuff under the bed without seeing the clutter, and we all know storage is important in these small spaces.

There you have it - Five easy ways to decorate a dorm room and make it sweet just by adding fabric {other than just standard bedding, like most people do} - What do you think?  Will you be using some of these ideas this Fall to spruce up your dorm room?

If you need any help with making this happen, be sure to contact us!  Remember we make custom upholstered headboards, bed scarves, window treatments, throw pillows and bedskirts.  Plus we have an extensive collection of beautiful designer fabrics to choose from, so creating a look you love will be easy!

4 Easy Ways To Better Your Kitchen

As we tour through clients' homes, we often get asked how to make the kitchen seem more inviting and welcoming to guests for entertaining.  We get it, kitchens can often seem cold and lack personality due to all of the hard surfaces - Like the walls, cupboards, counter tops, floors… Hard surfaces equal a cold feeling.  If your kitchen looks boring and  sounds echoey, chances are it doesn't feel too warm and inviting to guests, and it's in need of some softness - That's where Switch Studio can help!

Here are four easy ways to add softness to your kitchen, and therefor make it more cozy and inviting {not to mention these will also help to make the space look more complete and stylish}…

1.  Upholstered Seating - Whether it be upholstered chairs or an upholstered bench, upholstery surrounding an island is always a winning combo!  Adding upholstery creates not only softness, but also colour and visual interest - Much better than wooden seating in front of wooden cupboards and a big hard stone top, wouldn't you say?

2.  Rugs - We're not talking about a pitiful little kitchen mat, I'm talking about an actual area rug!  An area rug is a wonderful way to add softness to any room, and again a great way to add some texture and visual interest.  Don't be afraid to fill the space a bit, there should only be about six to twelve inches from the edge of the rug to the cupboards, like in the photo.  And don't worry too much about spills, if you get a quality rug you will be able to clean it.

3.  Window Treatments - Soft window treatments like roman shades or drapery is a total must in the kitchen!  Often times privacy is not required, but unfinished windows look, well, unfinished.  And wooden blinds or shutters just add even more hardness to the space, which is what you want to avoid, as almost everything is a hard surface.  Soft window treatments add softness, texture and visual interest - Noticing a theme here?  Good.  :)

4.  Cushions & Pillows - If you're lucky enough to have the space and layout to have banquette seating, we say go for it!  Having an upholstered bench or a built-in banquette with cushions and throw pillows on it is an awesome way to add more fabric to your kitchen.  Again, it's all about softness, texture, visual interest… and it just looks great.  Don't you think?

So there you have it, folks - Four easy, peasy ways to make your kitchen more warn, inviting, interesting, stylish, comfortable… We could go on and on…

Remember, we at Switch Studio are here to help you achieve these things in your own home!  We can help you by reupholstering your existing items, making you custom upholstered items, we sell quality area rugs and designer fabrics, we make custom window treatments, and cushions and throw pillows too {see our readymade pillows for sale in our shop HERE}!

Also, if you just have a question {or 10} feel free to just send us an email or give us a call, we're always here to help and offer advice to help you create a home you love!

Spring Cleaning - "Yard" Sale!

We're doing a little spring cleaning here at Switch Studio, and everything is priced to go!

Our fabric suppliers are super awesome, so sometimes they send us extra fabric!  Because of this, we have left over designer fabrics at reduced pricing that can be perused and purchased.  That's why we're calling this a "Yard Sale" - Because we're selling yardage of fabric.  Clever, huh?

If that isn't exciting enough, we have lovely custom furniture pieces that are just waiting for you to take them home. Each piece was custom made or custom reupholstered here at Switch Studio.

Switch Studio Showroom Update

If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter or Staci on Instagram then you may have seen posts regarding some fun renovations happening at Switch Studio!

It all started with a pile of wood - Doesn't look like much, but my were we ever excited to start!

For those of you who have been to our shop before, you know it was a big, empty, and not so inspiring space.  We're working on changing that by putting up some walls and creating a nice showroom.

The walls were formed within a few short hours, which was so awesome to see!

We're having two areas - The large area here will be our fabric selection area, and we'll have some drapery, hardware and headboards displayed.  Yes, we do drapery, hardware and custom headboards - Lots of people don't know this, so the displays will help people have a better idea of what we have to offer.  Smart, huh?

The showroom walls were done by Dan Salerno Carpentry and his team, and we cannot say enough good things about these guys!  So very professional, polite, tidy, and the quality of work is outstanding!  If you are looking to get some things done around your house, we highly recommend you call Dan Salerno Carpentry at 647-234-2515!

Once the drywall was up we were even more excited - It was actually looking like a showroom!

These two small areas are going to be set up as little room like vignettes which will contain a little bit of everything we do - Drapery, hardware, upholstered furniture, area rugs, wallpaper, throw pillows… We're thinking of doing one classic look and one more bright, fun look - What do you think?

Here is Dan, happy as always, plastering our walls - Again, we cannot say enough good about this guy and his team!  This was on a super snowy day when lots of businesses in the area shut down because of the weather conditions, but Dan came and worked hard all day!

After the plastering and painting was complete, up went the trim.  This was a very exciting day for us too, as it competed the look and finished off the walls beautifully!

Now that our walls are up and looking fab {thanks again to the dream team from Dan Salerno Carpentry for making this happen} we're working on getting the showroom in order.  It's going to take some time, as we need to do it in-between our usual work load, and Spring is a busy time of year, so please have patience with us.

We're happy to say we're expanding our line of fabrics, and we're going to be getting hardware, drapery, wallpaper and area rug samples in for our clients to see.  Fun, right?

We hope you'll contact us soon to set up a  time to come in, have a look at what we have too offer, check out our new fabrics, and discuss any upcoming projects you may have!

Thanks and see you soon!

New Switch Studio Website Coming Soon

If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter then you may have seen us post images around our new look!

That's right, we've rebranded, and are so thrilled with our new look!

We worked with Angela at Saffron Avenue to get our desired look for all of our printed materials.  It was such a delight to work with Angela on all of this, that we have now hired her to design our new website too.

Of course she is super busy, so the site will not be started for a while, but we'll be keeping you up to date with it all via Facebook and Twitter.  You can also signup for our newsletter to be notified when the new site is up and running HERE.

Over time we hope to add more and more to our new site to help our clients.  We'll be looking at adding things like educational downloads, videos, and free information.  If there is anything specific that you would like to be added that you feel would really help, we'd love to hear about it, so send us an email.

Thanks again for tuning in, and we hope you're as excited about our new website as we are!
