Upholstery Feature in Style At Home Magazine

Have you seen the April issue of Style At Home Magazine?  Did you see the awesome before and after reupholstered chair story that was in there?  Did you notice we were a part of that?

It's pretty exciting, so we thought we'd share it with you today….

Style At Home Magazine contacted us a while back to discuss this story and to see if we'd be interested in taking part - Needless to say we jumped at the opportunity.  The chairs came into us looking old and dated {as usual} we then stripped them down, and sent them off to Paint It Like New in Burlington to get painted.  Once painted they came back to us to be reupholstered - Take a look at the finished pieces...

This chair was found on the side of the road by an editor of Style At Home Magazine - Can you imagine being the person who tossed this chair?  I wonder if they have seen this article and are now wishing they had kept it and "Switched" it up?  It turned out beautifully, don't you think?

Originally the style of this chair was to be all the white vinyl with the pink piping, but we advised against that.  You see, double piping doesn't stick to vinyl very well, so it would not have lasted if it was all over the chair and especially on the corners.  We suggested a racing stripe down the middle, this way we could include the vinyl on the front, and still have the piping be secure.  The editors at Style At Home Magazine were happy with the new design idea, and it turned out beautifully!

This is one of our favourites {although really they're all kind of our favourites} - Don't you just love the bright soft floral print on the from, juxtaposed with the bold black and white stripe on the back?  It's stunning!

This was a sweet little chair, made even sweeter by using pretty pink paint, pink printed upholstery fabric, and nice pink nailhead detail to finish it off.  Perfect for a little girl's room, don't you think so?

This very stylish Jonathan Adler Chevron Fabric {available at Switch Studio} looks awesome with the bright red painted wood - A great way to create a statement piece!

We are so very honoured to have been a part of this story, and are thrilled with how all the chairs turned out!  Thanks again to Style At Home Magazine, who are always a delight to work with!

Top Ten Reupholstery Before & Afters Of 2013

We're finishing off the last day of 2013 with a recap of some of our favourite reupholstery projects from 2013!  It was very hard to choose just ten, but we managed...

So, without further ado, here are the top ten reupholstery projects from Switch Studio, from 2013, in no particular order…

These lovely chairs made the list, not only because they are stunning {after we got our hands on them}, but they were also featured in Style At Home Magazine, which is kinda cool!  The bold suzani print fabric was the starting point for the new look, from that the paint colour and main purple velvet fabric, from Kravet Fabrics, was pulled.  The look is truly stunning, don't you think?  See more about these chairs, the reupholstery process, and the Style At Home feature HERE.

This chair was still looking pretty good, but our Mississauga clients were just tired of the fabric, so we of course "switched" it up!  The fabric we used is this incredible print from Lee Jofa, by Oscar De La Renta - Yes, the stylish Oscar De La Renta has his own line of fabrics, and we carry them at Switch Studio.  This print we used is called Bloomsbury, and it's a favourite at the shop - Do you love it as much as we do?

It's always so great when a chair comes in looking really terrible {with the exception of the new paint from Paint It Like New in Burlington, of course}, and we reupholster it to make it look adorable!  We used this graphic print from JF Fabrics from their San Francisco Collection, and the owner was thrilled with the new look!

These chairs were given to our Oakville client by her grandmother, so they were looking a little dated and needed to be "switched" up.  We selected this fun Robert Allen Fabric, called Cats Cradle in the colour Lacquer and then a Benjamin Moore Paint called Caliente, and had them painted at Paint It Like New in Burlington.  We're thrilled with how these chairs turned out - A little paint and upholstery, and they're now perfectly updated for the young owner's home!

This chair was found on the side of the road, and it had clearly seen better days, but the shape was so lovely and if anyone could get it looking good again, it would be us, so we took it in.  Once it was completely stripped down we took it to Paint It Like New in Burlington to be spray painted Cloud White by Benjamin Moore.  We then upholstered it with two fabrics, the front in a nice nubby linen from Kravet Fabrics and the outside, piping and pillow was done in a coordinating print from Schumacher Fabrics by Celerie Kemble called Betwixt.  This chair was in the Switch Studio showroom for sale for $1200, and was just purchased the other day by a very excited Oakville client of ours - We're happy this gorgeous chair has found it's new home!

This wingback chair came to us from a Toronto client, and it really needed to be updated.  We went with a solid white fabric for the front, and a nice blue solid for contrast piping, from JF Fabrics' Maze Fabric collection.  To add even more interest we upholstered the outside of the chair in a nice graphic printed linen from JF Fabrics from their San Francisco Collection, and threw in a coordinating pillow for good measure!  Much better, don't you think?

Our client found this chair on a road trip through Michigan, and knew with our help she would totally love it, so she picked it up and brought it in.  We had it painted at Paint It Like New in Burlington in a metallic silver, and we reupholstered the inside in a beautiful red velvet from Duralee Fabrics.  It was looking good even from that point, but what really makes this chair sing was the Romo Fabric we used for the outside of the chair - It's a stunning cut velvet called Estella.  Don't you love it?  We sure do!

These Oakville clients of ours were planning to lighten up their home with some paint and of course new upholstery fabric too!  We reupholstered the seat of this cameo back sofa in a durable solid fabric, from JF Fabrics' Maze Fabric collection, and then used a lighter weight material for the back and piping from Duralee Fabrics.  From both a functionality standpoint and from the new look we gave them, these clients are very happy with their newly reupholstered cameo back sofa!

We forgot to take an actual before picture of these chairs {ooops}, but they were plain old parsons chairs, just like in the before picture we snagged from another project.  These chairs were sent to us by Meredith Heron Design in Toronto, who are wonderful clients of ours.  The team at Meredith Heron Design selected this great fabric combo using a faux ostrich skin vinyl on the seats, and this all time favourite Schumacher Fabrics linen print, Chiang Mai Dragon - You may remember some custom stools we made using this fabric, HERE.  Anyway, these chairs are true perfection, we think the nailhead trim detail that was added really makes them that much better - Don't you think?

And last but certainly not least, this Union Jack Sofa we did was a big time favourite of all who saw it, both in real life and online!  The fabric we chose was a red white and blue cotton from our local Oakville fabric supplier, JF Fabrics.  Now who says plain cotton fabric is boring?  It is certainly not boring when used properly, or in a fun way like we used it here!  And yes, we took red, white, and blue fabric and sewed it together to create the flag - Truly custom and hand made.  We're thinking this might be our most dramatic before and after transformation yet - What do you think?  You can see more about the reupholstering process HERE.

So, what do you think of our top ten picks this year?  Did your piece make the list?  Do you have a favourite?  Please share, we'd love to hear from you!  Thanks so much and all the best in 2014!

Fall Home Show Upcycle Challenge

This year we were asked to participate in the Fall Home Show's Upcycle Challenge!  The purpose of this challenge is to promote sustainable and eco friendly decorating ideas, while raising awareness and money for Habitat for Humanity.  Needless to say we were excited to participate!

For this year's challenge we had to take an old door {that I picked up at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore}, and recreate it into something gorgeous and useful.  If you have not been to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore yet, I urge you to go - It's filled with treasures, both ready to use, and ready to be repurposed!

We took our door and cut it down to create legs and a back for a cute little bench seat.  The seat, back supports, and stretcher {which stabilizes the legs} are all made from scrap wood we had hanging around the shop.  Great, right?

After a nice coat of black paint our door bench is looking much more like a bench.  We could have left it like this, but being a fabric, sewing, and upholstery studio we obviously had to add those three elements to this darling little piece to make it awesome!

Here it is all foamed up and ready for some fabric, pillows, and nailhead trim.

Looking much better now, wouldn't you say?  I selected a nice plush velvet for the seat, and very handsome plaid and houndstooth print fabric for the pillows.  The fabric was generously donated by one of our fabric suppliers, JF Fabrics, so a huge thanks to them!  Oh, and to add a nice little detail I decided to include a lovely dark pearl grey nailhead trim detail around the bottom of the seat.  We love how it all came together, don't you?

This bench will be featured online soon, and people will be asked to vote for their favourite door upcycle project {there will be several other people participating}, so we couldn't stop there - We had to style a pretty little photo in order to let this baby really shine!  Here are some sneak peeks...

Pretty, yes?

And now, here is the Fall Home Show's Upcycle Challenge final photo of our repurposed door...

Ta da!!  What do you think?

Be sure to follow along with us on Facebook and Twitter for more updates regarding how to vote, how to win tickets to the Fall Home Show, and info about my presentation on the Main Stage, presented by HGTV at the Fall Home Show this coming October 6th!

A big, big, big thank you again to JF Fabrics for supplying the fabric for this bench and pillows.  The bench and pillows will be auctioned off at the Fall Home Show during October 3rd - 6th, all all of the money raised will go to Habitat for Humanity and help to provide a lovely affordable home for those in need.  Also thanks to the team at the Fall Home Show for asking us to participate, it was a really fun experience.  And last, but not least, thanks to you {in advance} for voting for us {we'd really appreciate it}!
